Disaster Planning for Animal Care and Use Program Units at UCSB

UCSB EH&S has complied many valuable resources for Emergency Planning and Disaster Preparedness. The UCSB EH&S home page is located at http://www.ehs.ucsb.edu

Especially useful is the Emergency Planning Resource Page

1. UCSB Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) Campus wide

2. Emergency Planning Departmental Plan

3. Injury and Illness Prevention Program

4.Emergency Information and Resources

Each Animal Care and Use Program Unit (ACUP unit) should follow the Campus wide EOP and the local site EOP (such as the Sedgwick Ranch Reserve EOP). Further, each unit should develop a component, which addresses the animal care issues that might occur with an emergency. Minimal consideration should include actions to be taken when any aspect of the physical environment cannot be maintained. This would include considerations for alternate water, power, and housing. Preparedness should include the ability to maintain animals for a minimum of 3 days without outside support.

Examples of disaster plans can be found at http://www.iacuc.org

Online training is offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency http://www.fema.gov and at http://training.fema.gov/
