Project Excel is a new initiative led by university
faculty and community members, seeks to increase the
number of African American, American Indian, and other
underrepresented students in Santa Barbara and Goleta
K-12 schools who are academically prepared for enrollment
at UC Santa Barbara and other colleges and universities.
Consider
these startling statistics.
For the past decade, the UCSB student
body has been comprised of roughly 3% African Americans
and just 1% American Indians. Worse, less than one thousand
African American high school students in the entire
state of California are eligible for admission at any
of the ten University of California campuses. Recent
coverage of Hurrican Katrina reminds us of the immediate
and long-term tragedies that ensue when we do not provide
equal access and incentive to higher education for all
Americans. The look in any disenfranchised student's
eye says the same thing.
