The Journal of Haitian Studies (JOHS). The JOHS has produced two new editions in the 2003-04 term, including a special themed issue commemorating the Haitian bicentennial. Professor Claudine Michel, the Center's former director, has served as editor of the Journal of Haitian Studies since it moved from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, to UCSB in 1999. JOHS is the only refereed journal focusing solely on scholarship on Haiti and Haiti's rapport with the international community.

Screening Noir. Since its inception has been adopted as the official publication of the Black Caucus of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (the preeminent professional association in the field). The Center is working to broaden that base as it moves Screening Noir from a newsletter to a journal. Screening Noir has two special editions in progress. First is a volume that will feature select papers from the both of the Race in Digital Space and the Race in Digital Space 2.0 conferences that were held in 2001 and 2002, respectively. The second special issue focuses on Blaxploitation.

The proposed Multicultural Studies Journal has been conceived from the beginning as a multi-UC campus venture, and is still in the planning phase.

The two anthology projects addressed in the report have grown out of the research and pedagogical initiatives supported by the Center, though the Center itself is not at the present a publisher. This means that all the publications produced so far have been rigorously vetted by their publishers and judged not only as meritorious but significant for meeting needs in the field as well. In addition to the abovementioned, there are several other book projects in progress under the auspices of the Center, including two volumes in press (Dr. Patrick Bellegarde-Smith’s Fragments of Bone at Illinois UP, and Dr. Oyeronke Oyewumi’s Gender in Africa at Palgrave Press), four volumes under review including Drs. Michel and Bellegarde-Smith’s three edited works on Haiti (Spirit, Myth and Reality: Vodou in Haiti at Indiana University Press, God in Every Woman: Gender, Power and Politics in Haiti at Routledge, and Invisible Powers: Vodou and Development at St. Martin’s Press). Finally, there are a number of other research driven book and article projects in progress including an anthology on African Diasporic Technology workers, IT Adoption in Africa, Digital Art and Brazil, and the volume Legacy of Slavery: Unequal Exchange (lead editor, Attorney Adjoa Ayietoro).
