Projects examining any aspect of Chicano studies are eligible.  The Institute is especially committed to seeding innovative interdisciplinary projects with policy implications. Funding priority will be given to proposals that demonstrate a strong potential for subsequent extramural funding.  Applicants are also encouraged to incorporate graduate and/or undergraduate participation in the proposed project (for example by using some portion of the grant funding to employ Research Assistants).  Any UCSB faculty member or professional researcher may submit a proposal.  Only one proposal will be accepted from each Principal Investigator.  Award recipients must submit a final financial and narrative report for each grant before becoming eligible for subsequent grant competitions.  Each grant is expected to result in the completion of the proposed work within one year.  CSI support of the project shall be acknowledged in proposals to extramural agencies and in publications that result, fully or partially, from the CSI grant.  A copy of each proposal or publication must be provided to the Institute.  Awards of up to $4,000 will be provided for the period Dec. 31, 2007 through December 31, 2008.  Allowable expenses include: research assistance; lab analyses; computing assistance; research expenses and supplies; domestic and international travel for data collection, field work, archival research, and laboratory work.  Conference attendance must be limited to one meeting and such travel should be directly related to the development of the project or to the reporting of results. Items that will not be funded include: salary payments to Principal Investigators or other academic salaries (except student research assistants); equipment purchases, including computers and computing accessories/parts.  All budgets are subject to detailed administrative review by the Institute.

Submission of Proposals:
Submit two copies of the complete application (including the original) to: 2007 Faculty Grant Competition, Chicano Studies Institute, South Hall 4518, Campus Mail Code: 6040.  To be considered, proposals must be received by the Institute not later than 4:00PM, Nov. 13, 2007.  Late or incomplete proposals, faxes or electronic submissions will not be accepted.

Review Process and Criteria:
Each proposal will be reviewed, evaluated and rated by a committee of UC faculty representing expertise in relevant topics.  Proposals should be written for a committee of broadly based expertise and interests.  In addition to such standard review criteria as clarity, quality and feasibility of the proposal, the committee will assign importance to the significance of the proposed work in terms of its policy implications, and in terms of its advancement of scholarship in the discipline(s).  As noted, priority will be given to projects that show promise for extramural grant development. Awardees are expected to follow research protocols that demonstrate sensitivity to cultural factors affecting human subjects and non-academic participants.  In the proposal narrative, particular attention should be given to research methodology, including, if appropriate, how samples will be drawn, how control groups will be used, how questionnaires will be constructed and administered, and, in general, how cooperation will be elicited from local informants and subjects.  Copies of human subjects reviews or necessary research permits should be included if relevant.
