Annual Call for Proposals
Center for Chicano Studies
Grants for Conferences

$3,000 Maximum Award for Conference Proposals
Deadline for receipt of proposals: January 20, 2006
Applications available at the Center (SH 4518) or on-line via PDF (click here)

Conferences examining any aspect of Chicano studies are eligible.  The Center is especially committed to seeding innovative interdisciplinary projects with policy implications. Funding priority will be given to proposals that form part of (or initiate) a long-term research project that demonstrates a potential for subsequent extramural funding.  Any UCSB faculty member or professional researcher may submit a proposal.  Only one proposal will be accepted from each Principal Investigator.  Award recipients must submit a final financial and narrative report for each grant before becoming eligible for subsequent grant competitions. CCS support of the project shall be acknowledged in publications that result, fully or partially, from the CCS conference grant.  A copy of each publication must be provided to the Center.  Awards of up to $3,000 will be provided for the period February 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007.  Allowable expenses include: research assistance; advertising; xeroxing; domestic and international travel; lodging.  CCS funding may cover up to $750 in meal expenses, and up to $750 in honorarium expenses. Items that will not be funded include: salary payments to Principal Investigators or other academic salaries (except student research assistants); equipment purchases; publication of proceedings.  All budgets are subject to detailed administrative review by the Center.

Submission of Proposals:

Submit two copies of the complete application (including the original) to: 2006 Conference Grant Competition, Center for Chicano Studies, South Hall 4518, Campus Mail Code: 6040.  To be considered, proposals must be received by the Center not later than 4:00PM, Friday, January 20, 2006.  Late or incomplete proposals, faxes or electronic submissions will not be accepted.

Review Process and Criteria:

Each proposal will be reviewed, evaluated and rated by a committee of UC faculty representing expertise in relevant topics.  Proposals should be written for a committee of broadly based expertise and interests.  In addition to such standard review criteria as clarity, quality and feasibility of the proposal, the committee will assign importance to the significance of the proposed work in terms of its policy implications, and in terms of its advancement of scholarship in the discipline(s).  As noted, priority will be given to projects that show promise for extramural grant development. Proposals should identify confirmed or potential sources for supplemental funding. An expression of interest should be provided by proposed keynote/plenary speakers.
