Graduate Student Grant Opportunities:1) GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH AWARDS (Deadline January 30, 2006):UCSB's Committee on Chicana/o and Latina/o Research at the Center for Chicano Studies is pleased to issue a call for proposals from graduate students engaged in research on topics pertaining to the Chicana/o or Latina/o working poor in the United States. Projects grounded in all academic fields are welcome with priority given to interdisciplinary research projects. The Committee will be awarding grants of up to $1,500 each for 2005-06. Interested UCSB graduate students should submit 5 copies of a 5 page narrative that includes: a project abstract (150 words), a description of the research (including a brief review of pertinent literature), a description of methodology, the significance of the research, and a detailed budget. Funding can be used for supplies and other costs associated with research (e.g., interview transcribing, research travel, travel to libraries or to meet with collaborators). Applicants must also submit a current vitae and a letter of support from a faculty advisor. Proposals will be evaluated by the Committee on Chicana/o and Latina/o Research housed in the Center for Chicano Studies. In addition to such standard review criteria as clarity, quality and feasibility of the proposal, the review committee will assign special importance to the research methodology articulated. At the beginning of Fall quarter 2006, applicants awarded funding will be expected to write a brief report of their expenditures. Applicants will also be invited to present their research at a colloquium to be held in Fall 2006. Completed applications must be received by the Center for Chicano Studies (4518 South Hall) by 4:00 PM on Monday, January 30, 2006. Awards will be announced on February 13, 2006. For additional information, please contact: Professor Denise A. Segura, Department of Sociology, e-mail: segura@soc.ucsb.edu; phone: 893-4761. 2) GRADUATE STUDENT RECRUITMENT AWARDS:The Center for Chicano Studies announces the availability of graduate student recruitment awards for students who have identified Chicano studies as their primary area of research interest. The Center will provide $1,500 to each awardee who enrolls at UCSB. The Center invites your department to submit the names of no more than two qualified students who have been accepted and are being recruited by your program (each department is asked to rank the students if it is submitting two names). We also ask that each department identify a faculty member who would act as a mentor to each student nominated for the award; such faculty should work in the field of Chicano studies or a related area. Given the nature of the graduate recruitment process and the variation in departmental schedules, the Center's decisions regarding which prospective students will receive awards will be made on an on-going basis until we have depleted the resources that we are able to commit to this recruitment program. An ad-hoc faculty committee with representatives from the relevant divisions will review and make decisions regarding the requests from participating departments. Every effort will be made to provide timely responses to the requests. Departments should forward their nominations to Carl Gutierrez-Jones, Director, Center for Chicano Studies (carlgj@english.ucsb.edu). This program is funded by UCSB's Committee on Chicana/o and Latina/o Research.
