UCSB POLICIES FOR SATELLITE FACILITIES
General Policies

Federal law defines the facilities and operation of a satellite animal housing area facility. The law requires that any area holding animals for more than 12 hours must conform to federal standards for an animal facility area. These standards include but are not limited to the following:

  • Current IACUC Protocol information must be posted in the facility. Emergency contact information for the Facility Director, Facility Manager, and Animal Care Staff must be posted in the facility. See Animal Care and Use Room Sheet.
  • Notice of Reporting Concerns Regarding Animal Welfare must be posted.
  • Facility Director must be of Principal Investigator (PI) status.
  • Animal Care Staff scheduling information must be posted in the facility or reported to the IACUC Office. The IACUC must be able to identify and contact the person responsible for care at any time.
  • Animals must be observed daily and assessed for health status and to verify the physical status of the environment. If animals are not well or if a physical environment problem exists, action must be taken to correct the situation.
  • Documentation must be provided that Standard Operating Procedures are being followed and the observation schedule recorded. See the Monthly Room Work Schedule as a suggested documentation method. Standard operating procedures for daily health observations, animal care, and cleaning and assessment of the physical environment should be posted in the area of animal housing.
  • All animals must be identified. Cage cards or other means of animal identification must be present on all animal cages or runs and must provide sufficient information to identify the animals and the protocol under which they are being used. See Animal Identification for details.
  • A current census must be maintained at the housing location at all times. Census information must be submitted to the IACUC Office by the 15th of each month, for the preceding month. See Animal Census Report.
  • Veterinary medical records must be maintained. See UCSB Veterinary Medical Records for details.
  • Campus Veterinarian contact information must be posted in the facility. A local emergency veterinarian must be identified and contact information must be posted for facilities not located on the main Campus. All sick animals or animals found dead must be reported to the Campus Veterinarian. Follow the How to Make an Animal Health Report instructions. Animal Health Report Cards and Sick Animal Cards are to be kept at each facility. These are available from the Campus Veterinarian.
