Training Program for Animal Users Training material is available for viewing in the Language & Learning Labs, 2160 Kerr Hall, and at the Animal Resource Center, 6th Floor of Biological Sciences II. It is important that the training completed is documented for the IACUC records. There are logs available at each location for this purpose. Please be sure to provide all information requested. Some form of ID (a student, staff or faculty card) will be required to obtain tapes and slides at Kerr Hall. Contact the IACUC Coordinator for more information at (805) 893-5855. BASIC TRAINING (3 websites required for everyone, plus field guidelines for field studies)
A protocol cannot be approved until everyone on the protocol roster has completed the basic level training. If you are being added to an existing protocol, you cannot be added to the protocol until the basic level training has been completed. This level of training can be completed at any location with web access. To document web-based training, provide written verification to the IACUC Coordinator (IACUC@lifesci.ucsb.edu). Basic level must be repeated every year as information regarding animal care and use is frequently updated. SPECIES SPECIFIC TRAINING (required for everyone) Species specific training is required for each species covered in a protocol. Videotapes that illustrate a wide variety of commonly employed laboratory techniques, such as handling, restraint, injection procedures, blood collection, etc., are available to fulfill the species training for the rabbit, guinea pig, mouse, rat, or hamster. You will need to see the available training videotape for these species or have equivalent training by the Campus Veterinarian. Training for species other than those listed above must be arranged through the Campus Veterinarian. All species training must be documented in the IACUC Office.
PROCEDURAL TRAINING Please contact the Campus Veterinarian at (805) 893-2333 to arrange for any needed specialized procedural training. All survival surgery training must be coordinated through the Campus Veterinarian. |
