Purpose
Before sitting down to write a research funding proposal, successful grant-seeking requires understanding the culture of your target funding agency, communicating with program directors, and learning to articulate your research to audiences outside of your area of expertise. FUNDAmentals includes a series of workshops – including travel to Washington, DC (optional) – for faculty members who are ready to take the first strategic steps in pursuing extramural funding. The program will take place in winter and spring quarters of 2024 and culminates with a cohort trip to Washington DC. The workshops will be scheduled 2-4 weeks apart starting in February, around the availability of the cohort.
- Workshop 1 - Identifying opportunities: Find funders and program officers. Learn to read and interpret RFPs.
- Workshop 2 - Communicating with funders: Develop an email introduction. Learn the anatomy of a 1-pager / specific aims page / white paper.
- Workshop 3 - Peer review session: Receive feedback on your 1-pager from the cohort and Strategic Research Initiatives team.
- DC Trip – Travel to Washington, DC in a group: Visit UCDC, federal agencies, and meet program officers (pending availability of program directors to meet in person).
All activities, including the trip to Washington, DC will be organized and funded by the Office of Research.
