Purpose

Before sitting down to write a research funding proposal, successful grant-seeking requires understanding the culture of your target funding agency, communicating with program directors, and learning to articulate your research to audiences outside of your area of expertise. FUNDamentals includes a series of workshops for faculty members who are ready to take the first strategic steps in pursuing extramural funding, either from foundations or federal agencies. The program takes place in winter quarter of 2025 (Fridays at 12 pm – lunch included):

  • January 24: Workshop 1 - Identifying opportunities: Find funders and program officers. Learn to read and interpret RFPs.
  • February 7: Workshop 2 - Communicating with funders: Develop an email introduction. Learn the anatomy of a 1-pager / specific aims page / white paper.
  • February 21: Workshop 3 - Peer review session: Receive feedback on your 1-pager from the cohort and Strategic Research Initiatives team.
  • After completion of this series, participants will have the opportunity to travel to funding agencies to meet with program directors and learn about possible grants and fellowships for their work.

All activities, including travel, will be organized and funded by the Office of Research.
